Warm Paths
Pillar 3: Warm Paths — Referrals and References (quick-start)
This is where you work your warm leads, the companies your pipeline tagged Warm because you already know someone there. Warm paths convert far better than anything else, so this is the highest-leverage channel in your whole search. Use the attached doc for the full templates.
Core idea: a referral is the closest thing to a cheat code in the job search. One trusted person saying "talk to this candidate" beats a hundred cold applications.
Why warm paths win
Referred candidates get interviewed and hired at dramatically higher rates, because a referral is a trusted human vouching for you, which jumps you past the resume pile and the ATS. Your Pillar 2 pipeline already tagged every job Warm where you have a connection, so you're not starting from scratch.
Who counts as a warm path
First-degree connections at the company (strongest), someone one step away, former colleagues and cohort-mates, and anyone who's seen your work from building in public. Warmth is a spectrum; start with the strongest and work outward.
Make yourself easy to refer
A referral is someone staking their reputation on you, so make it a no-brainer: have your one-pager ready, the exact role and link, and a public track record of your work.
How to ask for a referral
Make it easy, specific, and low-pressure. Never ask someone to "help you find a job." Ask them to refer you to a specific role, and hand them everything:
Reconnect briefly, name the exact role and link, and give them an easy out.
Write the blurb for them: a few sentences they can paste into the referral system or forward to the hiring manager (who you are, what you built, why you fit this role, links). The full ask and blurb templates are in the doc.
Referral codes and links
A referral submitted through a company's internal program is what actually counts, and it usually earns your connection a bonus. When someone's willing, ask directly to be referred through their system or for the referral link.
No direct connection? Get the intro
If your connection knows someone there but doesn't work there, ask for a double opt-in intro: they check with their contact first, then connect you. Polite, and it works.
Work your warm leads like a system
Prioritize warm leads first, log every ask in your Outreach Log, follow up, always thank people and keep them posted, and reciprocate. A warm network is maintained, not spent.
References: line them up early
Different from referrals, a reference vouches for you at the end. Ask three or four people early (former managers are strongest), confirm they'll give a strong reference, and prep them: send each the role, what the company cares about, and the one or two things to emphasize. A prepped reference beats a generic "they were great."
Avoid these
Vague asks, making the referrer do the work, cold-asking strangers, mass impersonal asks, forgetting to follow up and thank people, and scrambling for unprepped references at the last minute.
Go deeper: the doc
This is the quick-start. The attached Pillar 3 doc has the referral ask, the copy-paste blurb, the intro ask, and the reference-prep checklist. Bring your questions to the group calls.
